What are semi-metallic brake pads?
Semi-metallic brake pads are made from a mix of metals like steel and other materials, making them durable and good at handling heat. They offer strong braking power, but they can be a bit noisier and cause more wear on brake rotors.
How long do semi-metallic brake pads last?
Semi-metallic brake pads usually last around 30,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on your driving habits and conditions. If you're heavy on the brakes or do a lot of city driving, they might wear out faster. But with regular care, they can serve you well for quite a while!
Are semi-metallic brake pads better than ceramic?
Semi-metallic and ceramic brake pads each have their strengths. Semi-metallic pads offer better braking power and handle heat well, making them great for performance or heavy-duty driving. On the other hand, ceramic pads are quieter, less dust, and are easier on your rotors, but might not perform as well under extreme conditions. It really depends on what you need—more stopping power or a smoother, quieter ride.
Do semi-metallic brake pads squeal?
Yes, semi-metallic brake pads can squeal, especially when they're cold or if there's dirt on them. They’re made of tough materials like metal, so the noise is more common compared to ceramic pads. It’s normal, but if it gets too loud or constant, it might be time to check them out!
Brake Pad Shim Materials

Advanced Quality Test Equipments
We know that great brake pads start with serious testing. That’s why our factory is equipped with a full set of advanced quality inspection machines – like NVH dynamometers, shear strength testers, compressibility testers, wear resistance machines, and friction coefficient testers.
Every semi-metallic brake pad goes through these tests to make sure it delivers the safety, comfort, and durability your customers expect. With GDST, you’re not just buying brake pads—you’re getting quality that’s proven through technology and care at every step.

Production Process of Brake Pads
Step1: Step 1: Mixing – 800L Plough and Rake Mixer
Each brake pad begins with a carefully controlled blend of raw materials—like steel fibers, mineral wool, graphite, resins, and wear-resistant additives.
Using an 800L plough and rake mixer, we customize the formula based on customer requirements. By adjusting the ratio of each material, we fine-tune key performance indicators such as friction coefficient, wear rate, and noise level to ensure optimal braking performance.

Step2: Brake Plate Processing Process - Gluing Machine
- Cleaning: The steel backing plates are thoroughly cleaned to remove any oil, dust, or debris – ensuring a completely clean surface.
- Shot Blasting: The surface is shot blasted to achieve the proper roughness, which improves glue adhesion.
- Gluing: Adhesive is applied with care, ensuring the correct thickness and full, even coverage – without leaving any residue on the surface.

Step3: Hot Pressing and Heat Treatment
Once the raw materials are mixed, they are poured into a mold and pressed under high temperature and pressure. This process ensures a tight bond between the friction material and the backing plate, shaping the initial form of the brake pad.
After forming, the rough pads are placed in an oven for heat treatment—typically baked for over six hours—to strengthen the structure and stabilize the material before moving on to further processing.
Each mold makes around 6 to 8 rough brake pads in one cycle. However, switching to a new mold isn’t quick—it takes over 30 minutes. Even though it takes time, this step is important to keep the quality stable and the sizes consistent during production.

Step4: Grinding And Cutting Stage
After the heat treatment process, the surface of the brake pads is still rough and may have burrs or uneven edges. To achieve a smooth and precise finish, each pad goes through a grinding and cutting stage. This step removes excess material, flattens the surface, and ensures the correct thickness and shape – making the brake pads ready for the next stages of processing and quality inspection. It’s a key part of the production that directly affects the final fit and performance on the vehicle.

Step5: Machining Process
At this stage, the brake pads go through slotting and chamfering to improve both performance and durability. Slotting helps enhance friction, improve heat dissipation, and allows for better dust removal during braking. Chamfering the edges reduces noise and prevents edge cracking, especially under heavy braking conditions.
Precision is key here—each pad is processed using a linear grinder to ensure the grooves are clean, the surface remains flat, and the thickness is consistent. This careful machining ensures the brake pads perform reliably and quietly in real-world driving conditions.

Step6: Painting Stage
To protect the metal backing plate from rust and give the brake pads a clean, professional finish, we apply a layer of paint using electrostatic spraying. This process involves spraying powder – such as flat or sand grain types – onto the surface with precision.
Key factors like electrostatic voltage, baking temperature, time inside the curing tunnel, spray thickness, and coating coverage are all carefully controlled. This ensures an even, durable finish that not only enhances appearance but also adds a layer of corrosion resistance.

Step7: Assembly Stage
Once the painting is done, we print product codes on the friction block and steel back. We make sure the position, size, and clarity are accurate and long-lasting.
Then, we install accessories like wear sensors, anti-noise shims, springs, and reinforcement plates. Depending on the type, we use either rotary or pressure riveting. All parts are carefully placed to ensure a secure fit and proper function.
We also check the strength of the accessories and test the warning indicators to make sure everything works well.
Finally, the brake pads are packed into color boxes, then into cartons and wooden pallets, ready for delivery. Every step is done carefully to ensure quality and protection during shipping.
